Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment involves the removal of infected tissue from the internal root canal space of a tooth. Common causes of infection of the dental pulp include:

  • Dental decay

  • Dental trauma

  • A broken filling or crown

  • A tooth that has undergone extensive dental work

  • Tooth wear

  • Severe gum disease

With early diagnosis of a tooth requiring root canal therapy, treatment can be completed with a high degree of success and comfort. However, if left untreated, the infection can grow and spread to the surrounding bone resulting in severe pain and potential tooth loss.

Symptoms of a tooth requiring root canal therapy include:

  • Spontaneous toothache

  • Lingering sensitivity to hot and cold beverages

  • Tenderness when chewing

As part of the procedure at Fine Smiles Dental, the canals within which the infected nerve is contained is thoroughly cleaned and prepared and eventually filled with a filling material to prevent future bacterial ingression.  Depending on the tooth, the procedure may take more than one visit.  A temporary filling will be used to protect the tooth and antibacterial dressings placed between each appointment to assist with the healing process and reduce inflammation.

Following completion of the root canal therapy, your dentist may recommend placing a dental crown over the tooth to provide long term protection.
