An Introduction to Dental Implants
There are several indications for dental implants such as stabilising a loose denture or replacing multiple teeth. Most commonly dental implants are used to replace a single missing tooth.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed and “integrated” into the jawbone. Once sufficient time is allowed for the screw to fuse with the jawbone (approximately 3-6 months), a dental crown is then able to be fitted onto the implant resulting in the missing space being filled with a permanent, fixed solution.
Why should I get a dental implant to replace my missing tooth?
It fills the space with a replacement-tooth that looks natural. The dental crown that is fabricated and fitted on to the dental implant is designed to match the colour and shape of the natural teeth.
Once the process is completed, the area can be brushed and flossed and maintained just like your other teeth.
Prevent the adjacent and opposing teeth from shifting
When a tooth is removed, the teeth around it can start drifting over time. Unfortunately, they can move in an unfavourable way, usually shifting or tilting which makes those teeth more difficult to clean. The increased risk of gum issues or decay can become problematic.
Allow normal chewing in that area
People can have difficulty in chewing on the side of a missing tooth. It can be less effective and sharp foods can traumatise the gum in that area.
Due to this difficulty, people tend to favour chewing on the opposite. The other side will then take more impact when eating which may have long term consequences
What should I do now?
Having missing teeth is not the only indication for dental implants. At Fine Smiles Dental, our dentists will carefully assess to see if implants are suitable for you. This includes a detailed evaluation of your medical health, a thorough clinical examination of your oral and dental health and a 3D X-ray (or Cone Beam CT scan) to assess for bone quality and density of the implant sites.
